The Concept of Comprehensible Input

Look at all the books in this photo! I took this picture in Prague at a museum. Amazing, right?

Here at the Naked Snail I like to work with 'comprehensible input'? What is that?

Input is everything you TAKE IN – in the case of language acquisition (learning): reading and listening to a lot of English texts.

Comprehensible means UNDERSTANDABLE – which means that you can easily understand the text, even if you don't understand every single word. This is how babies learn their MOTHER TONGUE.

The concept of comprehensible input is that the level of the texts you read and listen to (remember? think of 'listento' as one word) are a little bit higher than your CURRENT LEVEL (= your level NOW). In this way YOU ARE CHALLENGED to understand new words and new grammar structures, but they are not so difficult that you BECOME FRUSRATED.

So in this course we will do the following:

  • Each month there will be 15 lessons.
  • In each lesson there is a personal message from me. You can learn a lot just from reading the message slowly and carefully.
  • You will sometimes get audio files in the lessons. Plan your day: when can you listen to the audio files? Maybe while going to work? Or while washing the dishes? Or walking the dog? Or in the bath? Make it a fun and relaxing time for yourself!
  • You will also get texts to read. Find a nice time and place to read it in peace. You should not have to hurry! Always read them SEVERAL TIMES (more than once).
  • I always offer a small task as practice at the end of each lesson. If you have the time, do the task and post it in the comment section or send it to me by email.
  • The 5th lesson is always a quiz or offer for practice. Make this a game for yourself!

The more time you spend doing easy and fun things in English, the faster you will ACQUIRE the language – like a child. You're not in school. The goal is not to reach a certain level – but to ENJOY THE PROCESS as much as possible. How do you feel about that?

OFFER FOR PRACTICE

Write a few sentences or words about your motivation to learn English. How can you ENJOY THE PROCESS and not worry about the future?

E.g. I like languages. It's fun to learn new words. I never want to stop learning – I can stay young forever with learning. :)

If you want, you can share your text in the comment section or send it to [email protected].
